Remembering Emilio on his 14th Birthday!

"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart,
I'll always be with you".

Emilio's Snack Bags

Kathleen Polly

During the Holiday season we were able to give the Emilio's Snack Bags program a little make over thanks to the generous donation of lunch boxes from  the Ronald McDonald House. Instead of using our traditional  paper lunch bags, and with the aide of one enthusiastic intern from the University of Phoenix, Kathleen Polley, these bags were beautifully decorated and delivered to many children in the Hematology/Oncology clinic, who endure lengthy chemotherapy treatments daily as they courageously batlle cancer.

About Emilio Nares Foundation
Five-year-old Emilio Nares spent almost half of his life fighting cancer. On October 15, 2000 his courageous battle ended. Before he passed, Emilio captured the hearts of thousands of San Diegans, moving 1,400 people, mostly Latino, to join the national bone marrow registry to help him find a matching donor. Because so many people joined the marrow registry in Emilio's name, scores of future patients with life-threatening illnesses will have another chance at life.

"The Nutcracker" and the California Ballet Company....
Visits the Ronald McDonald House and the show brought countless smiles

The Hann Family

Over 250 people from Rady Children's, Kaiser, and Balboa hospitals enjoyed a holiday performance of "The Nutcracker".  For many of these famililes, this event was a great opportunity to break away from the holiday stress and the tribulations of living with cancer. It was for all a memorable and joyful occasion. Prior to the event, many families had an opportunity to meet several cast members as they visited the Ronald McDonald House. The California Ballet Company brought much needed joy and excitement to all the kids present, as members of the company read books for the children, interacted with the families and posed for group photographs.
The afternoon of the event, the ladies of the Philoptokos Society generously donated teddy bears to all the kids who attended the performance.
The Emilio Nares Fondation was the subject of local news media attention through the efforts of one our own, Gabriela Perez-Vargas, who was interviewed by Fox5 and NBC.

ENF wants to convey our sincerest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Diane Grossman and the California Ballet Company for a superb and incredible  holiday treat.
For more information on their performances and schedules, please visit the California Ballet website at http://www.californiaballet.org
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Ana Bautista
One of the most important assets to the foundation is our cadre of volunteers, without their help we could not perform many of our programs effectively.  This month we are proud to announce our Ana Bautista as our volnteer of the month. Ana joined the Emilio Nares Foundation volunteer ranks on June 2008. Since then, she has logged 87 volunteer-hours and has not shown any sign of slowing down.  She has rapidly become knowledgeable of many of ENF's programs and is always eager to learn more.  Ana is a very reliable, helpful, and enjoys all challenges. Her professionalism and dedication is reflected in all her endeavors.  One of her notable accomplishments was her participation during  Harvest for Hope, our main fund raising event, where she helped with the silent auction.   We are very grateful to Ana for her time, love and dedication and for giving a sharing her time with those who need it most, our patients.  From all of us at the Emilio Nares Foundation....Thank you Ana for being part of the Team!!
