THE NEW YOGA
|
 |
Group gatherings for women have been an avenue to express their feelings or concerns. As human beings, we have the need to be with others and share experiences. Through conversation, we can express our emotions and communicate our needs. Having a child in the Hospital, raises the level of anxiety and concern creating a stage for increased stress. Our Knitting and Crocheting for Hope program helps parents and children, especially mothers, to relieve stress. According to research conducted at the Harvard Medical School Mind-Body Institute, the repetitive action of knitting and crocheting creates a relaxation response. The Institute's research shows that a knitter's or crocheter's heart can drop 11 beats a minute, with a corresponding drop in blood pressure. The research also shows that focusing the mind in certain repetitive activities elicit a relaxation response. In many circles, this is known as the "new Yoga". Our program's goal is to teach parents and children to knit and crochet; This will not only teach them a new skill, but will provide a new method of relaxation as they spend numerous hours at the hospital during chemotherapy treatments.
