THE NEW YOGA
Knitting
Group gatherings for women have been an avenue  to express their feelings or concerns.  As human beings, we have the need to be with others and share experiences.  Through conversation, we can express our emotions and communicate  our needs. Having a child in the Hospital, raises the level of anxiety and concern creating a stage for increased stress.  Our Knitting and Crocheting for Hope program helps parents and children, especially mothers, to relieve stress.  According to  research conducted at the Harvard Medical School Mind-Body Institute, the repetitive action of knitting and crocheting creates a relaxation response.  The Institute's research shows that a knitter's or crocheter's heart can drop 11 beats a minute, with a corresponding drop in blood pressure. The research also shows that  focusing the mind in certain repetitive activities elicit a relaxation response.  In many circles, this is known as the "new Yoga".
Our program's goal is to teach parents and children to knit and crochet; This will not only  teach them a new skill, but will provide a new method of relaxation as they spend  numerous hours at the hospital during chemotherapy treatments.
Dear Friend,

I would like to thank all of you who made this year's Harvest for Hope such a tremendous success.  Over $90,000.00 was raised and will be used to support our programs and services.
This month, our newsletter focuses on providing information about these various programs.  Our programs are held at Rady Children's Hospital and the
Ronald McDonald House.

Healthy Eating and Nutrition Program
Teresa Cooking The goal of this program is to offer low cost and nutritious recipes for families whose children are being treated at Rady Children's Hospital. This program takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We place a lot of emphasis in using ingredients that are affordable and easy to find and in the proper use of fresh and seasonal products.  We encourage creativity; participants are often amazed at the variety of dishes which can be created with simple ingredients and little time and effort.

This program would not be possible without the generous contributions to our foundation and the dedication of our volunteers who commit their time to make it happen.
All are invited to stop by our kitchen to experience the moment and see the that there's much more than cooking going on, such as friendships and hope developing, and people who are humbly grateful for being on the receiving end of our efforts.
It's really all about the families!

Our mission at the Family  Resource Center is to provide a supportive environment to help families identify resources available in our community. Parents have access to information available through the foundation's computers and with the help of trained personnel. These services are provided on site at the hospital parents' center and can be used by parents while their  children are undergoing treatment.  Services available include: directions to specific locations inside the hospital such as showers, dining rooms, vending machines, etc. Our computer center enables Internet access and provides copier and fax machines for parents' use. Maps, directions and information about public transportation are also available.
Please contact us to receive more information about our programs and to schedule a site visit.

With Gratitude,
